Patchouli

A species of flowering plant in the family Lamiaceae, commonly called the mint or deadnettle family. The name patchouli, is derived from the Tamil patchai, meaning “green”, and ellai meaning “leaf”. The heavy, strong, woody, and earthy scent of patchouli has been used for centuries in perfumes and incense. Both patchouli oil and incense underwent a surge in popularity in the 1960s and 1970s mainly as a result of the hippie movement of those decades.

Ylang Ylang

A yellow, star-shaped flower that grows on the Cananga tree, Cananga odorata. This tropical species is native to countries surrounding the Indian Ocean. It is commonly used on the skin to promote relaxation, kill bacteria, and lower blood pressure. Ylang ylang’s heady, aromatic scent is fruity, flowery, and rich. This oil is often used as a top note in perfumes, such as Chanel Number Five.

Orange

Extracted from the rind of the sweet orange, Citrus sinensis using the cold press method which uses pressure to squeeze the oils from the rind. Sometimes, the leaves and flowers from the orange plant can be used as well. Studies have shown that Orange essential oil may be effective at stopping the growth of some types of bacteria and fungi, is mood lifting and helpful in reducing stress.
